Cabin bag size limits for Ryanair, easyJet, ITA Airways, Wizz Air, Lufthansa: the rules and the Piquadro trolleys that fit

Every airline publishes two cabin baggage limits: one for the small bag that goes under the seat and one for the trolley that goes in the overhead bin, with a weight limit where it applies. Here you find the limits of Ryanair, easyJet, ITA Airways, Wizz Air, Lufthansa, Vueling and Volotea updated to 4 November 2026, the fare conditions that come with them and, for each cell, the Piquadro trolleys that fit according to their external dimensions, wheels and handles included. This guide tells you where the bag travels; whether the bag is included is decided by your fare.

External dimensions of Piquadro products, height × width × depth, full footprint: wheels, handles and pockets included. The 40 × 30 × 20 cm trolley backpacks and the 55 × 40 × 20 cm trolleys have the same dimensions as the Ryanair, Wizz Air, Vueling and Volotea limits: they fit with the bag closed and not packed beyond the zip. With airlines that allow 23 or 25 cm of depth you have 3 to 5 cm of extra room. With Wizz Air the room is greater, because its limits exclude wheels and handles, which Piquadro measurements include.

How to measure your bag

  1. Close the bag as you will carry it to the gate: zips closed, expansion closed, telescopic handle down.
  2. Measure the height from the bottom of the wheels to the top of the carry handle: wheels are part of the measurement (except with Wizz Air, which excludes them).
  3. Measure the width at the widest point, side handles included.
  4. Measure the depth at the thickest point, front pockets and wheels included, without pressing.
  5. Compare the three dimensions, from largest to smallest, with the three dimensions of the limit in the same order: the bag may be rotated, not squeezed.
  6. Weigh the packed bag if the airline has a weight limit: the weight in this guide is for the empty product.

The Piquadro measurements in this guide are external dimensions with the full footprint, wheels and handles included, product closed: they are the same ones you find in the airline compatibility table on each trolley's page.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Ryanair cabin bag sizes?

Small bag under the seat 40 × 30 × 20 cm, included in every fare; trolley in the overhead bin 55 × 40 × 20 cm and 10 kg, only with Priority & 2 Cabin Bags, Regular or Flexi Plus. Limits updated to 4 November 2026. The Piquadro trolleys that fit are in the table above and in the 55 × 40 × 20 collection.

What are the easyJet cabin bag sizes?

Small bag under the seat 45 × 36 × 20 cm and 15 kg, included; large cabin bag in the overhead bin 56 × 45 × 25 cm and 15 kg, paid or included with easyJet Plus and with fares that include it. easyJet measurements include handles and wheels, like Piquadro's. Limits updated to 4 November 2026.

What happens if the bag exceeds the limits?

At the gate the airline checks the bag with the sizer; if it does not fit, the bag goes in the hold with a surcharge, usually higher than the one paid when adding the bag in advance. Measuring at home, with the bag packed and closed, avoids the surprise.

Can I use a backpack as my personal item?

Yes, if it fits the small bag limit: 40 × 30 × 20 cm for Ryanair, Wizz Air, Vueling and Volotea, 40 × 30 × 15 cm for ITA Airways and Lufthansa, 45 × 36 × 20 cm for easyJet. The Water-Resistant Cabin Travel Backpack for 14" Laptop (Corner 2.0) measures 40 × 30 × 20 cm; the Expandable 14" Laptop Backpack with Trolley Strap (Sync) 40 × 30 × 15 cm. The others are in the 40 × 30 × 20 backpacks and under-seat backpacks and bags collections.

Do Piquadro measurements include wheels and handles?

Yes: they are external dimensions with the full footprint, product closed. The comparison with airline limits is therefore made in gate conditions, with nothing subtracted.

Does “fits” mean the trolley is included in my ticket?

No. It means that the external dimensions fit that airline's limit for that type of bag. With Ryanair, Wizz Air, Vueling and Volotea the overhead trolley requires priority or a fare that includes it; with Lufthansa Economy Basic on short and medium haul it is not allowed. Check your fare before you leave.

Conclusion

Two sizes guide the choice: 40 × 30 × 20 cm to travel under the seat with low-cost airlines, 55 × 40 × 20 cm to go in the overhead bin with all seven airlines. If you mostly fly ITA Airways, Lufthansa or Wizz Air you can go up to 55 × 40 × 23 cm and gain litres and a laptop compartment; if you fly Ryanair and Vueling you stay at 20 cm of depth. The short answers, airline by airline, are in the FAQ Cabin luggage and airline size limits; the comparison with fourteen more airlines and the concept of included baggage are in the guide Included cabin baggage: which Piquadro backpacks and trolleys fit airline size limits.
